If Only It Were So Easy

One of my favorite bon mots made a surprise appearance this week. When told we had to find a way to be easier to work with, I was met with "we pay them, so they should perform". Oh boy. That sounds smart, but it's utter bullshit.

At its root, sure, there is some logic. We have a contract. We pay you. You do a good job. Utopia.

In real life, shit ain't simple. If we're hard to work with and we're lucky, suppliers will go elsewhere. If they decide  to work with us and they are merciful, we get the C-team. Technically, the Cleveland Browns have delivered on their promise to field an NFL team for the past 20 years. They met the black and white terms of service. We don't want Brandon Weedon auditing our books or any of the McCown's providing compensation consulting (although their ideas of a fair wage could help me out of a few jams).

We've gotta be easy to work with because suppliers are people. And people want to work with good people. And people who are willing to put up with a bunch of bullshit probably don't have other choices. I like having choices unless I'm at the Cheesecake Factory against my will (because it is definitely against my will) in which case a chicken sandwich will do.
